1/25/2026 10 PM - 3D modelling

To start I modelled what I wanted the coasters to look like in fusion 360 with 3mm ply and some 3D printed outer rings as the metal sections.

Next I will create the plans for cutting the 3mm ply and the templates for paint

After this I put together a render and after about 20 minutes of failing to add a decal that looks good I have quit but here it is and good night.....

1/26/2026 7 AM - Templates

Next I created the templates that I'm going to need. I learnt to use the drawing function on fusion to create a scale template for the plywood parts:

After this I spent some time putting my non existent graphic design skills together to create these 3 templates to paint onto the shields as patterns. I used Inkscape and researched different symbols prevalent at the time and that I think look cool as apposed to the basic checkerboard patterned shields.

S1 - The triskelion is an ancient symbol found in various cultures around the world, notably Celtic, Mycenaean, and Sicilian. It often represents concepts such as: Movement and progress, The three realms (land, sea, sky), Cycles of life (birth, death, rebirth).
S2 - This is a mitsudomoe symbol, a traditional Japanese emblem often used as a family crest (kamon) or a divine crest at Shinto shrines. It is one of the most widely used kamon in Japan and is associated with various meanings, including strength, protection, and natural elements like whirlpools and thunder.
S3 - The modern Norwegian term "Valknut" translates to "knot of those slain in battle" It is a widely recognized symbol representing Norse warrior culture and heritage.

1/26/2026 10 PM - Cut out the first shield

I printed the aforementioned template onto card and cut out the parts twice and stuck them together at 90 degree angles as shown in the 3d model.

I have made this 3d model to provide the option for using timber like I am or just 3D printing the whole project.

1/31/2026 - All Finished

After the last post I painted to the plywood brown and then added the splash of blue colour to it before painting and gluing the printed rings onto the edges.

I did also print and cut out the templates for the graphics but after some more research about how the meaning of some of these symbols have changed and the fact that I quite like how the shield looks in its current state I just left it with the blue.

I would have made a whole set but looking over the guidelines it is clear that is not looked fondly at.

I think this looks ok and am glad i made it.
